This week we started studying spiders and we are loving it! We talked about what we already know about spiders and asked questions about what we wondered and want to know more about. The Kindergartners had amazing questions! Here's a peek at some of our learning. Just a reminder that tomorrow, and every Friday now, is Library day! Please remember to bring back your library books.
Entomology is our fancy science way of saying that we are studying insects. We've learned about the characteristics that make an insect, sorted bugs and insects, observed preserved and live specimen and most of all, we've had fun! We've been working a lot on number recognition and sequencing during our Math Workshop. Last week I put them to the test and challenged them to put themselves in sequence using the number cards they were given. And....they succeeded! Take a look. Each Day as part of our Readers Workshop students are engaged in some type of phonics activity or word work activity to prepare them for future reading and writing. These guys did such a great job with this new activity today and they were so proud of their hardwork that I just had to share it with you. This Friday we started something new-and fun! Kindergarten and First Grade will not be doing our usual tutorial groups on Friday afternoons, instead we are mixing it up for a longer explore time. Forty Five minutes of fun with friends - yippee! Each week the Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms will take turns hosting this explore time and visiting the other classrooms. This gives our students valuable time to play, create, share and, well, explore with not only their classmates, but their friends from the other classrooms as well. This week we hosted and students from Mrs. Remick's class joined us. They all did such a great job. They were excellent hosts who proudly shared their classroom. On Friday the Fairbanks Museum came to our classroom to teach us about bats. I was so impressed with how much information the Kindergartners already knew about bats. We discussed how bats are nocturnal, learned the word insectivore (ask your child what this is), practiced our echolocation skills, and compared a bat skeleton to a human skeleton. Check out some photos from our visit below.
