This week we studied the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We read a book titled Balloons Over Broadway, which is the true story of how the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade got started and the man behind the magic: Tony Sarg. We looked at some of the balloons that will be in this years parade and discussed how big they will be and how many handlers are needed for each balloon. Did you know most balloons are taller than a 3 story building and they need 90 handlers?! Kindergartners designed and drew their own balloons that they would add to the parade. Then we looked at a map of our school and we chose a parade route and labeled it with a starting point so the other elementary teachers and students would know where they could watch our very own parade! We had a great time. Here is a video of us parading down the Kindergarten hallway. Just a reminder that tomorrow, Friday, we have a community meeting at 2:00. It is also "wear your favorite color" day! (Tomorrow is also library day, so please remember your books.)
During Math this Trimester we've been very busy exploring math manipulatives and learning 1:1 number correspondence, sequencing, subitizing, more/less, patterns and sorting. These are great skills to practice at home. Don't forget to visit our "Links for Learning" page under the resources tab for some fun online math games! Vermont author, Grannie Snow came to visit us last week! She read us two of her books: Big Ole Striped Silas and Silas Gets A Sister. The Kindergarteners were an excellent and interested audience. They asked great questions and discussed what it means to be an author. They also started discussing the editing process which is something we will be doing very soon with our own writing. If you'd like to know more about Grannie Snow or her books you can visit her website: thesilasseries.com Today we honored our Veterans with an assembly, but we've been learning about Veterans for the past week in Kindergarten. The students drew pictures and wrote letters to Veterans as part of a program whose goal is to get a letter in the hands of everyone deployed this Holiday Season. I just know their letters and pictures will bring smiles to the men and women serving our country! I apologize for being almost a week late with this post, we've been busy in Kindergarten! Thanks to all of our amazing parents our Halloween Celebration was a success. The students (and I) had a great time and we're so glad you were able to join us. Here are some pictures I was able to snag when I wasn't busy making spooky crafts. And as promised, you will find our class created Halloween story above.
